Can mobiles be safe for children?

Mobiles are wonderful, but they can be terrible for children

Until now, parents only had bad options.  They could refuse phones to their children altogether - often an untenable position.  They could give basic “brick” phones, but those have very limited functionality.  Or they could give existing kids’ smartphones, which typically only permit monitoring certain apps and are riddled with security holes which kids exploit.

CanDo wondered: can we do better?

AI creates an opportunity for an entirely new kind of experience. In collaboration with Mumsnet and Nothing, we designed Other: the first phone with on-device AI to police *everything* on-screen on parents’ behalf.  It protects against adult content, bullying, harassment, and other types of content you choose across every app on the phone.  You can set time windows and manage its settings on the web.  The interface is delightfully simple but very hard for kids to get around. We believe it’s the best phone in the world for kids.

The Other is a flagship phone for our software SafetyMode, distributed on Nothing hardware.  SafetyMode will soon be available to install on different phones too.
